Searching for jobs

Some points to note about the search engine

  1. It is not case sensitive
  2. It can match phrases (use double quotes)
  3. To specify Words you do not want use "-word_name"
  4. To specify Words you want use "+word_name"
  5. Indexing takes place every hour.
  6. New Jobs are partially indexed immediately upon arrival
  7. Common words are not indexed unless they are in a phrase
  8. Searching for words inserts them into the index

If you carry out a search and get no results back be aware that the indexer is run periodically and the term you may have searched on may not be in the index yet. By searching for a term it will be automatically appended to the next index run. Please be patient, your term will be indexed withing the hour possibly sooner.

The search engine is not case sensitive. Just make sure that all the terms are separated by spaces. Presently only the description, title, link and feed identifier fields are searched on jobs that are provided from an external RSS feed.

You can use phrases ie. "java apache" by using double quotes. This is available from the web page only but does not produce a valid RSS feed. I will add this feature at a later date or if someone asks me for it I will give it a higher priority. If you have a search string containing 10 elements separated by a space then you can tell the engine how many to match on. The engine will then find jobs where it matches at least that many elements. This is an advanced feature and you should use the advanced features facilty to access this.

Be aware that the search engine defaults to looking for all the terms unless you specify a number to search for. It is a good idea to put down several terms, ie 5, then ask to match at least 3 of them.

Using the RSS Search Facilty

To generate an RSS feed from the database please use the HTML interface and a Valid RSS url will be generated for you.

Please do not abuse this facility. I get most of the feeds every 4/6 hours so there is little point in anyone hitting me more often unless you are trying to DOS this box in which case I will block your IP. If you need the feeds quicker email me with your reasons and I will see what I can do. Intentions are to limit the RSS feed but this will depend on the popularity of the facility.

Jobs in the database are given a timestamp on arrival and will be marked as inactive after one month. I may reduce this time to 2 weeks later to keep performance as high as possible and the indexes to a reasonable size.

For those who want to know how to generate a URL dynamically then use the following guide.

Variable Alt-Variable Default Description
keywords K Please input a list of space seperated terms to search on
match M 1 Match at least this many terms
days D 30 Job received less than this many days before
limit L 100 Limit the amount of jobs to return
category C 10 The lower the category the less agencies

Adding an RSS Feed

If you want to add an RSS feed to the database then please contact me with the details of the feed and why you would like to see it added. Please supply me with a valid URL to the location of the feed.

Rating agencies

The rate agency page display your current rating for that agency if you have made one. If you leave a field blank then it will default to 10. Agency ratings are immediately reflected the next time you view the ratings page.

Please rate the agencies fairly, job unavailability does not mean bad service.

Contacting Us

Please feel free to contact me on any matter concerning this site.

Submiting Jobs

All fields must be filled in. The salary does not take a range it takes a single number. No ranges are allowed because most ranges seen on job sites are preposterous. The word "negotiable" is not allowed here either because users need to know what wage they can expect before going for an interview to avoid wasting their time. If a range is unavoidable enter the mid range and specify what you have done in the description field.

Adding Agencies

Most of these fields are compulsory to try and ensure an effective search and sort facility. If any agencies have got the wrong details please use the "Contact Us" facility to report what needs to change and we will update it. Later we hope to have a website management facility to enable key users to carry out their own updates.

Reporting Users

If you suspect a user is using this site for commercial purposes please use the "Contact Us" facility to report the user telling us their user name, (they owe us money if they have).

If a user has become abusive in their postings about an agency or another user, or if you have been offended by any posting, please report that user. We will then investigate, and the users account may be terminated.

Reporting Jobs

The same applies for reporting users.

About this site

Our main aim for this site is for people to see how other users have rated recruitment agencies. This has all come about because some recruitment agencies are becoming more and more unscrupulous in their activities which is making it hard for us job hunters to find work. We already have enough on our plate without having to deal with agencies that pretend to have jobs when they have not or are simply harvesting CV's for marketing reasons.

We hope that you, the user, can at least achieve one of the following from this site.

        1. Find a reputable agency near your location.
        2. Find a job with as few hoops to jump through as necessary.
        3. Learn about the techniques used by agencies to fit employees to jobs.
        4. What to look for in a job agency and what to avoid.
        5. Skip the middle man and get straight to the company.

This site is for non commercial use only. It has been written for users of a non commercial nature to post vacancies that exist within their own company or to use the search facililites available here. I repeat this site is not for job agencies or job websites or affiliates to use in any capacity. If a user or company wish to use this site commercially then fees will apply depending on circumstance. Be aware this includes the use of the RSS Job feed on this site.

For example:

        1. Joe Bloggs works for Acme Inc. Acme Inc are offering employees 2000 pounds if they find an employee to
fill a position in Acme Inc. Joe Bloggs finds someone through this site. No Fees apply.

        2. If Joe Bloggs works for a recruitment agency or job website then fees apply unless that recruitment agency
was employing someone within their company that will not be outsourced.

If you are in doubt about fees please contact us on the first instance to avoid any hassle.

Things I want to add and why

The following is a short list of features I would like to add. They are in no particular order and I do them when I get around to them or if someone asks it gets a higher priority.

  1. Search engine needs more features ie ( + - ) on terms
  2. Bulletin board needs some serious work.
  3. Add CV facility
  4. HR-XML compliant Job submitions

I would like to have several features added to the search facility similar to googles. In particular I would like to be able to use "+" and "-" to indicate "must" and "must not" include those search terms respectively. This is actually fairly easy to do, I just have not got around to it yet.

I am investigating various bulleting boards to allow users to add comments on agencies. I am tempted to write my own for the hell of it. This partly stems from the fact that there are not many that work on Postgres.

Adding CV's is not really a priority for me but if I do it will probably be done via a HR-XML tool of some sort. I would like to be able to offer an HR-XML authoring service to the users which they could then use to format the CV any way they want or even convert to Word or PDF

Jobs added at this site are immediately added to the RSS feed. I would like to convert all the facilty to use an HR-XML compliant interface.
