Background The Flight Dynamics area at the European Space Operations Center ESOC in Darmstadt is looking for an engineer to work in the area of Orbit Determination for the following missions a. ERS2 b. ENVISAT c. CLUSTER d. XMM e. Integral ERS2 is a 3axis nadirpointing satellite following a sunsynchronous near circular polar orbit at an altitude of nearly 800 km with a orbital period of 100 minutes and a repeat cycle of 35 days. Routine operations are automated with manual intervention required for orbit maintenance and special requests. ENVISAT is the largest Earth Observation Spacecraft ever built weighing 8.2 tons, and was launched in March 2002. It carries 10 sophisticated optical radar instruments to provide continuous observation of the Earths land, atmosphere, oceans, and ice caps. CLUSTER is a set of four cylindrical spinstabilized spacecraft that fly in a tetrahedronal constellation and research the magnetosphere of the earth XMMNewton is an Xray telescope with a very high degree of pointing accuracy, and INTEGRAL is a Gamma Ray Observatory. Both of these are in highly elliptical orbits in order to minimize interference from the proximity to Earth. Tasks The tasks in the area of Flight Dynamics Engineering shall include Contribution to the monitoring of routine mission operations, including orbit determination and station prediction Contribution to the optimisation and preparation of orbital manoeuvres, both in and outofplane Support of specific requests, including interferometry campaigns and collision avoidance Attendance at Operational Meetings and preparation of reports Maintenance of the software wand procedures, including migration to new hardware platforms or operating systems Operational constraints may result in performing operations outside normal working hours in areas for which Flight Dynamics support is required. In addition, there are close links between this work package and that for EnviSat Operations. Essential requirements A University degree in Mathematics or Physics Knowledge of UNIX SUNSolaris preferred and FORTRAN High sense of operational responsibility Desirable skills Familiarity with SUN Microsystems SOLARIS Operating System would be a definite asset Previous Flight Dynamics Operational experience would be a distinct advantage Other information e.g. dual location, special security clearance, foreign languages Fluency in English mandatory, knowledge of French EU National or in possession of a valid German ResidenceWork permit
