Purpose As a Technical Designer/Product Engineer - Garden Place, you will develop and execute the technical development process that ensures product adherence to defined quality standards established for specific Target owned brands. You will interpret designer’s concepts and usher product through its development lifecycle with a focus on costing, manufacturing efficiency, and quality consistency. You will ensure the timely resolution of all issues pertaining to the development, construction and manufacturing of product in the Garden Place/Patio area. You will also evaluate and approve product samples to ensure brand integrity is maintained and product is compliant to all federal guidelines as it relates to the product’s performance and safety. You will provide technical product guidance to Design, Sourcing and Merchant Teams in support of the Hardlines Product Design & Development process. See Yourself: Partnering with Designers, Merchants and Sourcing to understand the business initiatives, product functional requirements and performance expectations to ensure consistency of product across all categories within a given brand Representing Technical Design as part of a Cross Functional Team (including Design, Merchants and Sourcing) focused on taking Garden Place/ Patio products to new levels of styles, quality and value Ensuring brand integrity through the development of Garden Place/ Patio products that continuously exceeds guest expectations, aligning to assortment pricing strategies, maintaining consistency in brand quality across product categories and supports ongoing innovation and differentiation of the brand Partnering with Target Compliance and Production Services (TCPS) to understand and review product performance testing protocols and develop product to meet those requirements Providing efficient and effective product technical specifications and product standards which may include: raw material standards, product dimensions, technical drawings, care instructions, assembly instructions, and labeling or back stamp requirements Interpreting design concepts by creating technical drawings (using Solid Works or other 3-D CAD) to depict the desired product dimensions and any manufacturing related call outs Conducting timely sample evaluations and ensure approval of all products leading to final production specifications Conducting usability studies to review assembly instructions and make recommendations for improvements focused on the Target guest’s experience and satisfaction Providing timely resolution to issues relating to the manufacture of products Maintaining a working knowledge of government labeling requirements, safety protocols and Target performance standards for products across the Garden Place/ Patio categories Understanding benchmarks for specified owned brands to continuously evaluate and compare Target products to that of the competition and ensure Target product meets or exceeds the performance of the competitors’ product Remaining current in industry-leading manufacturing practices and equipment advances Reporting/Working Relationships Reports directly to Group Manager- Technical Development Interacts With: Merchants Product Design and Development (PD&D) Hardlines Design Target Sourcing Services (TSS) Hardlines Product Management Hardlines Product Design and Development Operations Target Compliance and Production Services (QA) Marketing Job Requirements Minimum Requirements: 4-year college degree in engineering or product development related field preferred Minimum 2-5 years experience in Garden Place/ Patio product development involving: - Thorough knowledge in the manufacture of patio furniture/ gazebos - Knowledge of development of outdoor planters, pots, garden tools and accessories - Knowledge of various metals, woods and fabrics for outdoor use - Knowledge of stains/paints/finishing processes Some international and domestic travel Excellent communication skills Excellent organization skills Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills Strong negotiation skills Initiative, self-motivation Collaborative team player Positive attitude Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook) Desired Requirements: In-Factory manufacturing experience.
