Message Home and Runaway Helpline are run by the charity Missing People (Registered charity number 1020419 Message Home is a Freefone 24-hour national Helpline and email service for anyone aged 18 or over who is away from home or missing. We give confidential advice and can help pass a message home. Message Home can also make referrals to other agencies where appropriate. Runaway Helpline is a Freefone 24-hour national Helpline email and Sms service for anyone aged 17 or under who has run away or been forced to leave home or care. We give confidential advice make referrals to other organisations and can help a child or young person get to a place of Safety. We can also pass on a message to enable children and young people to get in touch with their family or carers. Duties and description of role Responding to contacts by telephone email and Sms to the Message Home and Runaway Helpline services Listening to the caller and assessing what help they may need Exploring the options available to a caller contact Passing on confidential messages on behalf of a caller contact to their family or carers Making referrals to Social Services the Police or other agencies on behalf of the caller contact Accurately logging calls on our database systems Consulting with the Helpline Supervisor Signposting callers contacts to other organisations if necessary Knowledge experience and qualifications Formal qualifications or previous experience is not necessary although previous Helpline experience or knowledge of issues relating to young people and missing people may be helpful. Skills and personal attributes Excellent communication and listening skills both verbal and non verbal Fluent and colloquial spoken and written English Ability to respond to all callers in a calm empathetic non-judgemental manner Computer literate and ability to understand general database functionality Training and support Before being accepted on to our training course all volunteers need to undertake our selection process. This involves completing an application form a telephone interview and attending a selection day. Full training is given before volunteers take calls. The initial volunteer training course consists of 20 hours training either over six weeks or over three weekends. Volunteers then spend several shifts (11 hours) listening in to calls before taking calls. Volunteers are also asked to attend any ongoing training sessions talks or volunteer meetings organised. Volunteers are supported at all times by the helpline Supervisor and are debriefed during and after their shift. Supervision takes place after three months which forms the final part of the selection process. Volunteers then have supervisions every quarter with a Supervisor and once a year with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. Supervisions are carried out to ensure volunteers are supported and to exchange any feedback. Volunteering of time A shift of four hours a week would be preferred. Due to the complexity of our training volunteers will gain maximum satisfaction by regular commitment over an extended period of time. Message Home and Runaway Helpline require volunteers seven days a week between 10am-10pm. Disclosure check A Criminal Records Bureau check for volunteers is required for this role. This will be organised by Missing People. Expenses Volunteers out-of-pocket travel expenses (up to £5 a day) can be reimbursed. Location Missing People is based in East Sheen South West London.
